The 40-Year-old Oscar-winning Welsh actress is starring as Desiree Armfeldt in a revival of Sondheim’s 1973 classical music. Theatre critics sharpen their pencils when a Hollywood star takes to the stage. But the initial word of the preview audience was that Miss Zeta-Jones, offers an extremely strong performance.

Director Trevor Nunn has chosen a small scene parts, chamber music approach to the show, set in turn-of-last-century Sweden and deal primarily with the amorous adventures of Desiree Armfeldt, a famous actress of the day.

Zeta-Jones has a throat, sultry voice that she uses to good effect, flirtatious. But his record, especially in the first act, seems exaggerated, too strongly conscious of herself. She is much better in the quieter scenes and musical shines in Act 2 during her rendition of the most popular song of the series, “Send in the Clowns”, a touching moment of the flood introspection.

Sir Trevor Nunn, said: “She is a theater girl. She has a music theater in their blood.”

As the mother of Desiree, the light Lansbury is a marvel. She is almost perfect as Madame Armfeldt lady, a woman who has tasted all that life has to offer and still enjoy the memories – and cynicism – that goes with it.

The 84-year-old actress does something extraordinary, too: Her Madame Armfeldt becomes progressively weaker as the night progresses, subtly comments on one of the deeper themes of the musical – the mortality of all, regardless of their position in life. The aging process has never been more eloquently on the screen.

The inspiration for this “A Little Night Music” was an even smaller production, also directed by Nunn, done at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London and its male protagonist, Alexander Hanson, as Desiree true love has come to Broadway.

Zeta-Jones first trod the boards as a 12 year old at the head of Annie in the Grand Theater in Swansea. She later appeared in the West End of London, before leaving the stage for the first star on television in The Darling Buds of May, and then a series of Hollywood films like The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment and Traffic. She also won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role as Velma Kelly in the 2002 film version of Chicago.
