Judge allows Chris Rock “Good Hair” movie to open

Comedian Chris Rock Documentary film “Good Hair” can be opened across the U.S. this week after a judge on Monday ruled against a filmmaker who accused the actor of stealing the idea for the film.
U.S. District Judge Dale Fischer told the court that before reaching his decision, he saw both “Rock Good Hair” Regina Kimbell and 2006 documentary “My Nappy Roots”.
Fischer said that movies do not seem to be for the same audience, and some of them “are not similar at all.”
Kimbell had tried to block the Rock and HBO Films release “Good Hair” without her approval on the grounds that he stole from his own film.
Kimbell asked for $ 5 million in damages in its lawsuit, which accuses Rock of copyright infringement and unfair competition, claiming that his film “My Nappy Roots” was the basis of “Good Hair”.
Rock said his inspiration for “Good Hair” was actually his daughter, aged 7, who once asked, “How come my hair is not good?”
The film takes a journey to explore race and identity humor, examining the industry behind black hair products, as evidenced by the pain that some women have to have black straight hair.
Kimbell demand but can go, despite the judge’s decision “Good Hair” to open across the U.S.
“We always knew it would be difficult for the judge to grant a preliminary injunction request. We go to trial, the lawyer said Kimbell Reginald K. Brown, said in a statement. A trial date has not yet been established.
Rock appeared on “Saturday Night Live” from 1990 to 1993 before going to work in films, several HBO comedy specials and co-create the sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris” in 2005.
“Good Hair”, which includes interviews with civil rights leader Al Sharpton, author Maya Angelou and the rap star Ice-T, was playing on the festival circuit this year, and opens in limited release on 9 October. Expand the capacity of its U.S. launch Friday.
